Arugam Bay, at the north end of which lies the town of Pottuvil, is lined by small fishing villages.
Take a trip across the lagoon to the mangrove forests, which are home to numerous species of birds and reptiles. In the dry moths - from August to October - you may also see elephants, which come here in search of water.
The highlight in Arugam Bay is the waves, which attract surf fans from all over the world. Arugam Bay is considered to be Sri Lanka’s prime surfing spot.
The wind surfing conditions are ideal here from the end of the rainy season in mid-December through until April; from April through to November the conditions are ideal for surfing.
